Yankee Stadium: 6/21/08
Yankees vs Reds

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Yankee Stadium was the scene of an unlikely pitchers duel on this Saturday afternoon as Reds starter Daryl Thompson pitched 5 scoreless innings while the Yankees’ Dan Giese took a shutout into the 7th. The Yankees squandered several early scoring chances en route to 12 team LOB in a game where they failed to score. Giese lost his shutout on his last pitch of the afternoon when Edwin Encarnacion delivered a clutch 2 out single to drive in Ken Griffey Jr and Brandon Phillips. Corey Patterson promptly hit a 2-run shot off Yanks reliever José Veras and just like that it was 4-0. A Brandon Phillips single plated 2 more runs in the 8th as the Reds shutout the Yankees 6-0.

The Cardinals jumped ahead early on a Ryan Ludwick sac fly and made it 2-0 when Jason LaRue singled in Rick Ankiel in the 4th. Starting pitcher Braden Looper went 7 innings only allowing a single run on 5 hits, but with no additonal run support the Cards bullpen let the lead slip away on a pair of solo shots in the top of the 8th. The Cards put their first 2 on in the bottom half of the 8th but failed to drive them in as the Royals prevailed 3-2.
